Gay activities in Myanmar Aug 2017

There was no dearth of cute boys, I would even say Myanmar (as well as Cambodia) boys are cuter than Thai boys, certainly they are slimmer and darker. I exchanged many a smile, in some cases even look back at each other up to three times (when passing in opposite direction, then the distance becomes too far). But I didn’t get involved with any of them for various reasons:

Language barrier. I don’t speak any Burmese, and most of them don’t speak English. (Lame excuse: a friend doesn’t speak local languages, and his English is rather poor, nonetheless he gets boys in every country he visits.)

No venues. There are no gay saunas or cruisy places that I know of. There is only one gay massage in Yangon.

Can’t bring anyone home. Hotel rules did not allow guests in all places I stayed in. And the rooms were not nice by my standards, and I had my stuff spread out.

Furthermore, everything I tried in Thailand and that doesn’t work here, probably won’t work in Myanmar either.

But here some of my attempts and reports by others in chronological order:

A farang friend FF visited Myanmar in 1984. When he came back to the hotel at night, all the staff were sleeping in the reception hall. He beckoned one of the male staff to come to his room, and gave him 1 USD afterwards. Minutes after the man was gone, another of the male staff knocked on his door and said “I want a Dollar.”, and in the course of the night FF had the entire male staff coming to his room.

Another Farang friend FF (with vast experience propositioning straight boys in many countries) visited Myanmar some years ago. He reported everyone he laid his eyes on would have gone with him, but they were all afraid of being seen with a foreigner / being reported to police or whatever. But he managed to take one into the bushes.

When I had dinner around 10 pm in a local restaurant in central Kin Pun Sakhan (Kyaitko, base for trip to golden rock), there was a group of male locals on the next table. One of them chatted me up and quickly came to the point of offering me massage by lady. I showed him some gay porn on my mobile, which was met with indifference.

Online dating

Not much activity compared to Bangkok. I messaged two on gayromeo, one hasn’t read the message yet, the other replied and we met on Sunday at his work place. Efficient communication, good English, civilized, has been abroad, but not so much my type.

On hornet, I messaged 7 (4 no reply, 1 not his pictures, the other two inefficient communication). One messaged me, not my type.

National Swimming Pool

I go to swimming pools mainly to ogle at boys in swimwear, with swimming just a side activity for me. The national swimming pool has a restaurant overlooking it, where I could sit in shade and have a meal (extensive menu in Burmese and English, delicious food at low prices) to see if it’s worth going in, and it was.

Open 9-12 and 13-16, closed on Friday (wrong opening times on google maps, correction submitted). Entry 1000 MMK for locals and 3000 MMK for foreigner. Lockers are provided, but they were dusty/dirty and you have to bring your own padlock. Shower, changing room, toilets nearby, all very basic. The changing rooms (with shower) have a door that reaches from my knee to chest. There is no hook to put your clothes (and floor is wet), I had to hang them over the door. Water in the pool is ok (some turbidity, cannot see clearly to the ground). No restriction on what you can wear, no need for cap for hair.

When I went on Sun 13aug2017 from 10:05-11:30 (when sky covered in the water, when clear sky out of pool into nearby shade to avoid sunburn), there were about 50 others in and around, out of which 10 cute boys. Exchanged smiles with some of them, and one chatted me up and afterwards we (I, cute boy, and two of his friends) had lunch in the restaurant. I would have paid for all 4 of us, but when it came to paying, the most unusual thing happened: the cute boy insisted on inviting me. After some weak protest I gave up and accepted the invitation. Unimaginable in Thailand!

(You could argue that this is just a trick I haven't had before, but I told him that I leave Myanmar the next day, and will be back in January. He said when he comes to visit me in Germany, I can invite him, but that was just to save face and end the discussion, he has never been outside Myanmar. The invitation was genuine!)

We exchanged facebook, but the big question is: what is he looking for with me? We chatted to the point that both of us are single. Before I meet him again on my next trip, I have to make my intentions clear to avoid wasting time.

Similar to Thailand, underwear is sold on the street in Yangon, at about half the price (1000 MMK = 25 THB, where similar would be 50 THB in Thailand).

Myanmar Aug 2017 various impressions

Blessed by decades of military dictatorship and being shut off from globalization, the evils of modern times (cars, fast food, fizzy drinks, excessive use of plastic, mobile phones, tourism) have not set foot in Myanmar.

Advice to my readers is to go there as quickly as possible before it gets spoiled and only North Korea (according to reports; I haven't been) remains as a place where you can experience the good old times.

Various impressions in alphabetical order:

Addictions

Cigarette smoking is widespread, and even in restaurants smoking is allowed. Betel nut chewing is wide spread. One of the few negative things I can say about my stay in Myanmar. Picture left one of the many stalls that sell betel and tobacco, right locals processing betel nuts.

Bed bugs

When waking up after first night in Yangon, I had these spots on various places of my body. Slightly different from anything I had before (I have been bitten by ants and mosquitoes, stung by bees, had pubic lice; fortunately I’m not sensitive to insect bites/stings: there is some light itching that I can live with). Check on internet: probably bed bugs, and find out that they don’t transmit diseases. So I will stick with the room for the rest of my stay. I inspected the bed and didn’t find any trace of bed bugs, and swatted one mosquito in my room that had blood (my blood?), but the location of these spots and development over the days (it takes days until they are gone) is different from mosquito bites.

Car and driver

My farang friend FF knew someone in Mae Sot, who knew someone in Myanmar, who drove us from Myawaddy to Yangon in the course of 4 days 3 nights. Rate was 2,000 THB (80,000 MMK) per day (that is 24 hours, fuel for about 200 km per day and the driver’s accommodation and food included). Split by two that makes 1,000 THB per day for me (Mon morning to Thursday evening 4,000 THB = 160,000 MMK for me, clearly beats public transport, hitchhiking, walking). Our driver was circumspect, English ok (no Thai), non-smoker, and I was completely happy with his service and would hire him again any time. He is based in Moulmein. Contact me if interested.

Clothes drying in rainy season

The trip was during rainy season, and even though we were quite lucky with the weather (only minor changes necessary due to rain – Myanmar friend says it can rain an entire week during rainy season), there was high humidity in air which meant clothes wet from sweat or rain did not dry over night. That meant I had to find other ways to dry my wet clothes: on the bonnet of the car with heat from engine or on a poorly insulated hot water reservoir in my hotel.

And two cases of having dirty, damp clothes laundered to get them back clean and dry (in Hpa-An in guesthouse T-shirt 300 MMK, shorts 400 MMK; in Yangon at Metro Laundry 2000 MMK per kg).

Convenience stores

There are no 7-Eleven or Family Mart at all, and local convenience stores (ABC, g&g grab & go, TIPTOP) are thinly spread.

Data roaming
I used the AIS sim2fly from Cambodia (details see there). Inquire in service center if I can use it in Myanmar, and top up (300 THB, cheaper than buying a new SIM for 399 for 8 days unlimited 3G), and I could even tell them to set the starting time of the plan. Everything worked fine.

Drinking water

Most street restaurants do not serve free drinking water like in Thailand, but free hot tea instead. Along the roads, there are free drinking water stations which I used without ill effect. (And yes, I think everyone drinks from the same cup, I know I did.)

When climbing up to the Golden Rock, I crossed a stream and asked a monk if the water is potable. He confirmed and went to fetch water with the empty plastic bottle I gave him. I drank all that water – 0.5 l there and another 0.5 l further up – without ill effect.

(That has to be seen in context with a hiking trip to the Alps with my parents around 1998, where I drank water from a river and got sick. Since then I haven not drunken water from rivers. But now, having drunken tap water everywhere in SEAsia, and a monk confirming it's potable and fetching it for me, what can go wrong?)

Electricity network
Electricity is unreliable, in Hpa-An there was a power outage ever evening (on our 2 days), in Yangon none that I noticed in 4 days. Everywhere I went I saw generators, protection from over- and under voltage, separate cables (?) for emergency lighting, boxes with batteries to power emergency lights (?), and DC/AC converters. If all that money was invested in the network and power stations, there could be a stable electricity supply for everyone!

In the countryside, I saw many solar panels and rechargeable batteries (lead-acid, which leaves the question how charging and discharging is controlled, there must be a circuit that prevents overcharging and deep discharging).

Poor electricity network means less light pollution at night. You can have a walk through Yangon at night without being blinded by LED advertising boards.

English language proficiency

English is not widely spoken, and many speakers of English have a pronunciation that can only be described as awful/horrible. Nonetheless, in restaurants or when asking for bus I always found someone who could help me in English.

A friend says the last person who had contact with native speakers where their grandparents under British rule, and from then on teaching English was Chinese whispers.

Food

I ate local food throughout my week in Myanmar. Most meals were good, some were delicious, at prices similar to Thailand (and in strong contrast to Cambodia where food cost twice as much and was awful). The second day in Myanmar I noticed my body odor changed to sweetish with a hint of vinegar, and after two days back in Thailand back to normal.

Hitchhiking

I didn’t have a situation where hitchhiking was necessary. A Myanmar friend told me it’s done with hand flat, towards the oncoming traffic, and move arm up and down.

Internet cafes are sparse

On Friday, I was looking for an internet café to book flight to Bangkok for Monday. I thought this is trivial, but it was not! I asked reception and they sent me a fast food place that has free WiFi (but I want a computer with a keyboard, where I can have several browser windows open). From there they sent me to Scott market, from there to Super One Hyper Market, from there to Junction City, there I gave up and went to tourist information near Sule Pagoda, and they recommended post office just around the corner (North-East). There I finally got internet (500 MMK/h, I was charged 250 MMK for about 30 minutes), after 4 hours of erring around town (I like to walk around town anyway, but it’s better to walk without destination than looking for some place). Later I found some internet cafes by chance in 13^thand 14^th street (400 MMK/h).

Money exchange

MMK = Myanmar Kyat. At time of travelling Aug 2017, rounded: 1 EUR = 1600 MMK, 1 USD = 1350 MMK, 1 THB = 40 MMK. I went to Ratchadamri where various Superrich and others have offices, and found same rate buy 0.0252 sell 0.0248 THB/MMK everywhere; the inverse is buy 39.68 sell 40.32 MMK/THB. One shop did not have MMK in stock, but at green Superrich I got MMK.

FF went to Superrich Silom and fortunately phoned them in advance: they don’t stock MMK and need one day advance notice, and only his passport would be accepted as proof of identity.

From 10,000 THB that I exchanged to 396,000 MMK, I have 49,250 MMK left. Add visa 1600 THB and flight Yangon to Bangkok (Nok Air 2100 THB), and one week Myanmar cost me 12,370 THB (Bangkok to Mae Sot by my friend's car was free).

Overcharging

Several places are free for locals, while Foreigners have to pay (Golden Rock 6000 MMK, Sule Pagoda 3000 MMK or 3 USD, Shwedagon Pagoda 8000 MMK).

Price comparison to Thailand

Yangon bus aircon 200 MMK = 5 THB (in Thailand from 10 THB and up to 20 for long rides).

Food prices comparable.

Haircut 2000 MMK = 50 THB (in a local area, and the board said “Tourist 2000”, the rest was in Burmese, so I assume locals pay much less, say 1000 MMK = 25 THB, where I would pay 50 THB in Thailand).

Hotels in Yangon about twice as expensive as similar standard in Bangkok, Hpa-An about the same, Kinpun Sakhan (Kyaitko, base camp for golden rock) about three times as expensive.

Yangon taxi (no aircon) from near Sule pagoda to airport 17 km 8:22-9:16 8000 MMK = 200 THB similar to Bangkok (there are no meters, price estimated independently by Myanmar friend in Bangkok and by hotel staff).

Underwear: I bought two trunks on sidewalk at 1000 MMK = 25 THB each, cheaper than in Bangkok where similar would be 59 THB or two for 100 THB.

Public transport in Yangon

The circle line train is rather infrequent (there is a gap of 3 hours between 13:40 and 16:40 for the eastbound train from Central Station), but I was lucky and had to wait only half an hour.

Buses are plentiful, but I didn’t prepare with a bus map or app, so I had to ask locals at the bus stops which line goes in my direction. Most lines have the line number only in Burmese numbers!

Road conditions and traffic
Traffic in Yangon is very light compared to Bangkok, I would guess the traffic density is ten times less! That means you can get around by car without much traffic jam, and as a pedestrian cross roads quickly. Motorbikes are prohibited (?) in Yangon, and I noticed only 2 in 3 days. I saw a few bicycles as well.

Roads are not as good as in Thailand.

Cars drive on the right side of the road (originally left side as a British Colony, changed in 1970). But most cars are imported from second hand from Japan and have the steering wheel on the right side.

When crossing the border from Mae Sot to Myawaddy, I saw the traffic sign for change of lane that I have been looking for elsewhere in vain:

(From Nong Khai to Vientiane, Aranyaprathet to Poipet, Baan Hat Lek to Cham Yeam change somewhere on the road without sign, Huay Xai to Chiang Khong there is a loop in the road to change the side.)

Scams

In central Yangon, I was approached twice by locals who speak good English. After general chat, he told me he collects coins, and asked if I have coins from Germany. No. He would take banknotes as well. No, bye. (I knew this scam from internet.) The second who approached me with the same introduction, I cut him short to save time.

In Sule pagoda I was approached by a local who speaks good English, and even some German. He showed me pictures on his mobile phone of pagodas, then Barack Obama at Shwedagon, then a White woman surrounded by children. Here I saw where this is going (donations for an orphanage) and cut him short: “What are you looking for?” – “Spenden” (German for: donations). “No sorry, bye.”

In Shwedagon pagoda, a local with a bunch of flowers approached me and led me to one of the small shrines to pour water over the statues. But when he was putting flowers on the shrine, and asked me to hold the flowers, I saw where this is going (make me pay for the flowers), put my hands in my pockets and said “I won’t touch these flowers, I will go now, bye.”

Somewhere else a woman with a baby approached me “I don’t want money, I want rice for my baby”. I knew that scam already from Indonesia (the rice, or milk in Indonesia, is returned to the cashier and the money the tourist spent buying it is split).

But all of them polite, not aggressive, and instantly let go of me once they realized I know their scams.

There are some popular markets in Chachoengsao province, one was covered recently (2013 on the gay forums by a member), but they are of little interest to me.

Chachoengsao (ฉะเชิงเทรา also known as Paet Rio (Paed Riu, 8rio (paed=8)) แปดริ้ว, province east of Bangkok). I will abbreviate it as CCS. On my trip I saw less than 10 Farang in two days.

I have an acquaintance from Camfrog in Chachoengsao, whom I wanted to meet on Sunday, his day off. We did not meet, but after four years of dating Thai boys I know that they have problems with space-time coordination and planed accordingly. This is the tipping point: now I can go to any province for weekend trips without needing to know anyone there (so far, I always needed a peg to go somewhere).

Preparation for this trip was just a few hours reading on the internet and saving webpages downloaded there on my mobile phone, and taking pictures of the relevant pages in tourist guides with my mobile phone for reference (so I don’t have to carry the whole book). Everything else by asking locals.

My reputation as a cheapskate whoremonger has not yet reached Chachoengsao, so I could make a fresh start there. (But a friend who comes from CCS messaged me just hours after I posted a picture on facebook.)

Take van from Ekkamai bus station (no big buses, but there seem to be big buses from Mor Chit). Slow traffic along On Nut, and the van stops at the bus center at the airport! If I had known before, I could have gotten directly to the airport, faster and cheaper than via Ekkamai.

My friend cannot have guests, so I need a hotel. I didn’t make any plans, just asked a tuk-tuk driver at the bus station if he knows a hotel in walking distance to the railway station. I ended in Yenjit Bungalow. I later found out that they are listed in agoda: http://www.agoda.com/asia/thailand/chachoengsao/yenjit_bungalow_and_resort.htmlThe price on agoda is cheaper, but after taxes it’s the same as the walk-in rate (600 Baht per night). It’s located at the end of an alley, over 100 m from the main road, and the sign at the main road is only in Thai. Most Thais I talked with in CCS have heard of it.

If you come by car, they have bungalows for drive-in as well:

The owner (?) speaks good English and helped me to find public transport. Wifi is free, fast (tested with videos on youtube, no problem) and straightforward (password is on the key tag; I just tried with the strongest network and it worked).

I call my friend, he cannot meet me on Friday or Saturday evening after work, only on Sunday. It’s too early to go to bed. I go to Suan Somdet Phra Sri Nagarindra Park (สวนสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทร์). Unlike most parks in Bangkok, it is open all time. There are groups of boys and girls out drinking and listening to music and driving around on their motorbikes. Boys who drive past on a motorbike smile at me or say hello. It’s ghetto style: screeching tyres, incomplete combustion (dark exhaust fumes), exhaust modified to make it louder, cars that are a driving discotheque. Quite different from Bangkok!

Making contact is easy, you just have to walk past and there is a 50% chance someone will say hello, smile or even invite you for a drink. And if there is a cute boy who doesn’t notice me, I just ask for the way and see where this leads. On the trip I spoke to more than 50 Thais, several of them my type. After about 1 hour in the park, I proceed to the river shore. Again groups of boys and girls.

I want to go home to sleep, by chance my way leads past the biggest nightclub, Dome. What I see outside is promising. I go in (23:55, purchase of one drink – in my case Beer Singha for 100 Baht – is compulsory). It is large, about thrice the size of DJ station or NAB. About half full, which allows easy roaming, as I like it. I spot a table with cute boys and while I still think how to find an excuse how to join the, one of them raises his glass to me. I join them and will stay there the rest of the night. The cutest boy is opposite. Again no need to look for a way to get next to him, it happens after some shifts. It is too loud to exchange more than a few sentences. I have my earplugs in. Later, they ask me if I could pay for another bucket of ice (80 Baht), which I do (and order a bowl of crisps for 50 Baht as well). I even okayed the purchase of another bottle of whisky (220 Baht?), but the order was never placed. How do I get the cute boy into my room? By the time (2:30 am) I have come up with an idea (ask him if he has a motorcycle and can drive me back), they are leaving. I stay till closing time (3am), some customers are so drunk, they have to be carried out. Plenty of broken glass and spoiled drinks on the floor.

I go home alone. Nonetheless, an interesting new experience, and no lack of cute boys and social interaction. It seems there is no age restriction in the disco. About 5% of the customers are under 18 years old (my estimation, I asked just one and he is 17). Unfortunately, smoking is allowed. Clothes smell of smoke when you come back home, and I got a burn on my finger from someone else’s cigarette. No burn holes in my clothes so far. Aircon is insufficient, I think it was well above 25 C inside.

Summary: there are many cute boys in the park, along the river and in the disco. Getting into contact is easy. Now I just need a way to take them to my room, be it for free or for pay. One constraint is that they come by motorbike, with two or three on each motorbike. How can I separate the cute one to go to my place on motorbike? Do these boys lend their motorbike to friends?

The Ganesha temple (the world’s largest Ganesha in happy reclining posture) is out of town, about 10 km to the east on an island in the Bang Pakong river. I walk to the bus station (with stop at the railway station, due to rain). There are a song thaew from the bus station, it takes 30 minutes and costs 30 Baht. (I had to ask where the song thaew leave, there are no signs.) I would estimate the size similar to that in Nakhon Nayok, but Nakhon Nayok has two statues. In CCS it’s a whole complex: Ganesha, Guan Im, another statue under construction, market, restaurants, it was much busier than in Nakhon Nayok. The major difference from the Ganesha in Nakhon Nayok (I confused the two on pictures, before I learnt that there are two of them) is the 32 postitions around the base:

I did not remember where exactly I got off the song thaew, and can’t see any signs of public transport back to Chachoengsao. So I ask a police officer about transport back. He calls a colleague who takes me back for free on his motorbnike. Not exactly back to CCS, but to the Chinese temple with a tall tower (I noticed the tower on the way to the Ganesha temple and took a picture to ask for details). About 200 m north of the tower is the Tewasatharn Riew Yiang Tai, maintained by the Sawang Satthatammasatharn Foundation (เทวสถานวิหาร ริ้วเยี้ยงไท้ มูลนิธิสว่างศรัทธาธรรมสถาน):

I call my Camfrog acquaintance (after waiting an hour for a reply to my sms) to make a date for Sunday. He said he will be in Bkk on Sunday and we can meet at Victory monument. I will show the messages (in Thai) we exchanged on facebook and elsewhere to Thai friends and ask them if it’s not crystal clear that I was coming to CCS to meet him there. I learnt the hard way that there can be misunderstandings and changes and in a Thai boy’s plan at any moment, and plan accordingly, so I can just shrug this off. Evil forces in the universe.

At night, a stroll through the park and along the river. Some boys remember me from Friday. Now there are only 73 provinces left where I can go for a fresh start (hook up with boys). A group of boys stand around a car, one of them is cute. I join them for a chat. They ask me if I like girls, I reveal that I like boys, everyone takes a step back, like “don’t touch me”, and there is a gap in the conversation, until one of them continues: “do you like him?”. From this and from previous similar encounters, I conclude that revealing my sexual orientation is a roadblock to getting laid (I will elaborate on this in another post). I ask the cute boy for his name and use this occasion to shake his hand and tickle his palm with my finger (meaning: I want sex with you). Is this a good idea and generally understood? Our ways cross later in Dome, but nothing ensues.

I enter Dome at 23:35 it is full, difficult to get around. There is a table with three cute twinks, I join their table, but they don’t show interest in me. Is this common practice, as a single customer, to simply join a table that has space left to put your glass or bottle on it? Staff sometimes splits tables, i.e. move all bottles from two tables onto one to allow a new group of customers to use the now empty table.

I wish I had a way to spend more time in the bathroom. Good light and you can get a glimpse of skin and underwear.

A fight breaks out elsewhere. Lights go on in that part and staff has problems to get through to separate the parties and throw them out. On passing my table, someone tries to grab my empty bottle (probably for use as a weapon), I am quick and hold it, but I get an angry look.

No further incidents, go home alone.
